18 People Died in Nepal Plane Crash

Local officials reported that on Wednesday, a tiny plane in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, went off the runway, killing at least 18 people.

The pilot, the only survivor of the Saurya Airlines disaster, is receiving treatment in a hospital, according to Tribhuvan International Airport spokesman Gyanendra Bhul. According to police, the 18 Nepalis and the Yemeni national on board were all workers of the carrier.

Thick smoke could be seen billowing from the burning airplane on the airport runway in photos taken by the Nepali police.

Around 11 a.m. local time, the plane crashed during takeoff from Kathmandu to Pokhara, according to Bhul. He said the jet was on its way for technical maintenance.

The aviation authorities stated, "Rescue efforts were started immediately and the situation was brought under control."

The accident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with flying in Nepal, which is frequently ranked among the riskiest countries in the world because of a number of factors, including its hilly topography.

There have been several aviation mishaps in the Himalayan nation, which is home to eight of the world's fourteen tallest peaks, including Everest. Because of the abrupt changes in weather, airports are usually located in remote, hilly places that are challenging to access.

Aircraft with 19 seats or fewer are more prone to suffer accidents due to these challenges, according to a 2019 safety assessment from the Civil Aviation Authority.

Even if the nation's safety regulations have improved recently, there are still issues, and the risks associated with flying are increased by the underfunding of outdated aircraft.

At least 68 people lost their lives in the worst plane tragedy to occur in Nepal in over 30 years last year when a Yeti Airlines flight crashed close to Pokhara.

Twenty-two people were killed when a Tara Air plane from Pokhara crashed into a mountain in May 2022.

51 people were killed when a US-Bangla Airlines flight from Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, to Kathmandu crashed and caught fire at the beginning of 2018.

Additionally, a Tara Air flight that was traveling the same route as the 2023 disaster crashed in 2016.
