Nael M was a teen from Paris who was killed by police during a traffic check. Overnight, protestors armed with pyrotechnics battled riot police in a Paris suburb.

Thirty-one persons were detained in conflicts that resulted in the burning of 40 automobiles, primarily in Nanterre, a Paris suburb where the victim grew up, said Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin on Wednesday.

Police Shot Teen in Paris

Prosecutors claimed the boy was driving a rented car in a western Paris neighbourhood early Tuesday when police pulled him up for violating various traffic laws.

A video circulating on social media and confirmed by the French news agency AFP shows two police officers attempting to halt the car, with one putting his firearm through the window and firing at close range as the teenager seems to continue driving. Before crashing, the automobile travelled a few dozen metres.

The adolescent died shortly after emergency personnel attempted to revive him at the site.

A demonstration was held outside the police station by local citizens. Tensions rose later Tuesday between police and protestors who set fire to a vehicle, wrecked bus stations and tossed firecrackers at police, who retaliated with tear gas and dispersal grenades, according to recordings carried on local media.

Local media agencies aired video footage posted on social media showing adolescents struggling with police late into the evening, including a film that showed protests happening in the centre of Paris, roughly 11 kilometres (nearly 7 miles) from the troubled area.

According to the Nanterre prosecutor's office, the officer suspected of shooting the driver has been detained on murder charges.

Protests

Mornia Labssi, a local citizen and anti-racism crusader, claimed she had communicated with the victim's family and that his name was Nael and that he was of Algerian ancestry.

Several events happened last night in Nanterre and Hauts-de-Seine, including street fires and scuffles. The police prefecture reported 31 arrests, with 24 officers receiving minor injuries.

The gunshot on Tuesday caused chaos around the French city, with 24 people arrested as of this morning (June 28).

Since then, the teen's family has shared an image with the caption, "The love of my life."

"I lost a 17-year-old, I was alone with him, and they took my baby away from me," Nael's distraught mother added. He was still a youngster, and he needed the care of his mother."

"I will never forgive them," his grandma remarked. My grandson died; they murdered him. We are not pleased, and I am opposed to the government.

"They killed my grandson, now I don't care about anyone, they took my grandson away from me, and I will never, never, never forgive them in my life, never, never, never."

Footage from the incident on Tuesday, confirmed by AFP, purports to show an armed traffic cop aiming his service gun at a yellow Mercedes in the minutes before the shooting.

The armed cop reportedly tells the 17-year-old motorist, "I am going to lodge a bullet in your head."

There is a blast, and the automobile accelerates before Nael dies at the shooting scene, which occurred at about 8.30 am.
