Luke Laidley, a Chicago-area man who survived the 9/11 attacks in New York City, died after jumping from a boat into Lake Michigan to save at least one child who fell from a raft, according to his family and officials,
Laidley was rushed to an Evanston hospital in critical condition on Tuesday afternoon. According to fire authorities, the Winnetka man died later.

Winnetka Police Chief Brian O'Connell said the city's police and fire departments were called to a water rescue at Elder Beach around 1:20 p.m. Tuesday.
According to witnesses, Laidley, boating on the lakefront with others, leapt into the water to assist at least one youngster who had fallen from a raft being towed by the boat.
"Everyone was sort of gathering on the beach, and someone dialled 911 because the kids were yelling that something was down," said witness Amy McCarter, according to CBS Chicago.

However, Laidley went underneath before others dragged him back aboard the boat and began CPR as the ship approached the beach.
After then, firefighters and paramedics worked on Laidley before transporting him to the hospital, where he died.
According to Natalia Derevyanny, a spokesman for the medical examiner's office, an autopsy was set for Wednesday.
Laidley's relatives informed WLS-TV that after graduating from Boston College in 2001, he went to work for Morgan Stanley in New York.
"His second day on the job was September 11, 2001," his relatives told the channel. "As a survivor of Tower 2's 61st floor, he later wrote, 'I encourage all of us to count our blessings every day.'" Give of oneself without expecting anything in return. And become a member of something bigger than yourself."
According to the family, Laidley leaves behind a wife and three small children.
